Optional Course Features:
Canvas allows course settings to be set to ON or ALLOW. ON means it’s on in every course, for everyone. ALLOW means you can choose to use it if you want to. Most optional course feature options will eventually be released into the main production environment, which means that at some point, they will go from being optional to automatically applying to everyone. Enabling them early is a great way to take advantage of them without having to wait, and get familiar with them at your own pace. More from the Canvas Guides HERE. If you have interest in or opinions on available or unavailable feature options, let us know!
How To Enable Them:
By going into your course settings, into the Feature Options and turning them on. More information HERE.
Here is an up-to-date list of all the optional course features!
The New Gradebook is a beta feature that allows instructors to view an improved version of the Gradebook, and it replaces the current Gradebook in a course.
The new gradebook has many things the current Gradebook cannot do, BUT there are also a few features that the New Gradebook cannot do yet. The New Gradebook is a Beta feature right now, so it will continue to be improved over time.
Read more about the New Gradebook HERE to decide if it’s for you.
Mastery Paths [beta]
Configure individual learning paths for students based on assessment results.
MasteryPaths allows you to customize learning experiences to students based on student performance. Along with course designers, you can identify activities for each student’s learning path and differentiate assignments for required learning, optional learning, or choosing their own content and assignments within a specific path. More HERE.
Require Usage Rights for Uploaded Files
Require Usage Rights for Uploaded Files requires users to indicate usage rights for all course files before publishing the file to a course. This feature will always be a feature option in Canvas. More HERE.
Optional User Features:
You have a few choices to customize your personal Canvas experience. These will only apply to you – they will not affect any of your courses or anyone else’s account. You can turn them on and off whenever you like. More from the Canvas Guides HERE.
How To Enable Them:
By going into your account settings, to the very bottom of the page and turning them on. More information HERE.

High Contrast UI
High Contrast enhances the color contrast of the UI (text, buttons, etc.), making those items more distinct and easier to identify. Note: Institution branding will be disabled.
Underline Links displays hyperlinks in navigation menus, the Dashboard, and page sidebars as underlined text. This feature option does not apply to user-generated content links in the Rich Content Editor, which always underlines links for all users.
