Hello Canvas folks!
When you log into Canvas, you might notice something different on the login screen.
That little banner that says, “Need a Canvas Account? Click Here, It’s Free!” used to be there, and then it disappeared… and now it’s back! We’ve added this feature so that students can self-enroll in select courses (this option must be turned on in the Admin console for each individual course, so no worries about random students showing up in your courses!). We’re really excited about this because it will make things ten times easier for potential students who need to take orientation courses before officially registering for a course (a good example of this is the GED Orientation class).
We wanted you to be aware of it so that you don’t feel the need to sign up for a new account — anyone who registers for a Canvas course or is teaching through Centralia College is generated an account automatically. Students need a special code in order to enroll in a course (generated by Alexis in eLearning) and then they can enroll in an open course, so they’ll know if they should be using that link.
This is an all-or-nothing kind of deal — we can’t just activate it for certain users and not others; this means that we’re dissuading students from using this link unless they are specifically told to use it to enroll. Pass along that information and save someone the hassle of trying to create a new account when they already have one!
Because of how much Canvas is always changing (in good ways!), I have got some serious David Bowie stuck in my head as of late. You say, “Changes” and I say, “Wow, I love that song, too!” I encourage you to give it a listen — it really goes well with the lovely weather we’ve been having the last couple days and speaks words of wisdom for students who will be leaving campus in the Spring for bigger and better adventures!
